Maine Jewish Hall of Fame, presented by Dorothy Suzi Osher in memory of Alfred Osher

The Maine Jewish Hall of Fame, presented by Dorothy Suzi Osher in memory of Alfred Osher was created in 2018 to bestow recognition on outstanding Jewish leaders from throughout the state who have brought distinction and honor to the State of Maine or beyond. Those listed below, who were elected into this 2020 Class by the Nominating Committee, reflect the Jewish value of making the world a better place through outstanding accomplishments and/or humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors. This year’s Inductees include leaders in the fields of law, business, philanthropy, politics and life.

Maine Jewish Museum Announces 2020 Inductees to the Maine Jewish Hall of Fame Presented By Dorothy Suzi Osher in memory of Alfred Osher.

Eight new inductees to be enshrined in a ceremony at 3 pm on September 19th, 2021.

The Maine Jewish Museum will induct a new class into the Hall of Fame on an
annual basis and invites the entire community to attend this year’s induction
ceremony on September 19th, 2021 at the Maine Jewish Museum


Dear Friends of the Maine Jewish Museum,

This year’s event will be held in person and will also be presented remotely via zoom so you can attend which ever way suits you.

The Maine Jewish Museum Hall of Fame 2020 Induction Ceremony “Presented by Dorothy Suzi Osher in Memory of Alfred Osher” will finally occur on September 19, 2021, at 3:00 pm in a garden reception and ceremony at the Museum, just a year after originally scheduled.

Honored this year are:

  • David Astor*—Portland, ME
  • Rabbi Tuvia Ben Shmuel Yosef (Donald Gellers)* – Eastport, ME
  • Norman Godfrey* – Portland, ME
  • Jerry and Susan* Goldberg— Portland, ME
  • Abraham and Fannie Levey*—Portland, ME
  • George I Lewis* – Portland, ME
  • Leonard and Merle Nelson– Cumberland Foreside, ME
  • The Unobskey Family* – Calais, ME
    (including Joseph and Sarah and sons William, Arthur and Charles)

Please join us on the Host Committee for this event to honor the lives of the honorees and acknowledge their contributions to Jewish and secular life in Maine!

Joining the Host Committee will also support the Maine Jewish Museum in its role as a living repository of the rich history of the Jewish community in our state, and its mission of celebrating and honoring the contributions and diversity of Maine’s Jewish immigrants and building bridges of appreciation and understanding with people of all backgrounds.

The Induction Ceremony program will feature:

Master of Ceremonies and Host – Irwin Gratz
Morning Edition Producer of Maine Public Radio, former chairman of the Maine Association of
Broadcasters, and served as National President of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Keynote Speaker – Rabbi Rachel Isaacs
Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Waterville, Maine, Director of The Center for Small Town Jewish Life, and Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at Colby College.

We hope you will join us as members of the Host Committee with a donation of $200 per couple or $100 for an individual.
