I’m A Jewish Mainer Youth Art Contest 2024
Criteria, Information, and Deadlines

Purpose

The I’m a Jewish Mainer Youth Art Contest encourages young people throughout the state to reflect on their experiences growing up Jewish in Maine and express their Maine Jewish pride through art. Submissions are enthusiastically welcomed from youth of all backgrounds with any connection to Judaism/Jewishness.

Art Criteria

  • Original artwork created by students in grades K – 12 responding to the statement “I’m a Jewish Mainer”
  • Two-dimensional artwork created using charcoal, pencil, photography, lithography, pastels, oils, acrylics, crayon, ink paint, marker, and/or mixed media
  • Three-dimensional artwork including ceramics, pottery, castings, and sculpture
  • We will not accept computer graphic, AI, or video-based presentations
  • Two-dimensional entries should be no larger than 24″ X 24″ in size
  • Three-dimensional entries should be no larger than 2′ X 2′ X 2′
  • Only one (1) entry per student may be submitted

Judging Criteria

  • Interpretation of the topic; how well your image communicates your idea
  • Originality and imagination, creativity, and craftsmanship
  • Expression and style
  • Depth of feeling in Application Statement (parents of young students may assist with this statement)

Art Contest Information & Deadlines

  • All artwork must be hand-delivered or mailed to the Maine Jewish Museum, 267 Congress Street, Portand, ME 04101 by 3:00 PM on FRIDAY, MAY 3 – no submissions will be accepted past this deadline
  • A clear photo of the artwork in .jpg, gif, or .png format not exceeding 5mbs must be attached and sent using the provided field of a signed, completed application by by 3:00 PM on FRIDAY, MAY 3 – please use the student’s name as the file name.
  • The Maine Jewish Museum assumes no responsibility or liability for damage to or breakage of the artwork – artwork should be wrapped and packaged to avoid damage or breakage, with special care taken with mailed submissions
  • Judges will view each student’s artwork and statement and select three winners from each division: K-2, 3 – 5, 6 – 8, 9 – 12
  • To ensure impartiality, please put your name on the BACK of 2-D artwork and on the BOTTOM of 3-D artwork in small lettering – do not put your name or any other identifying information on the front of your artwork
  • Students and parents/guardians will be notified of competition results in June (by email)
  • Winning entries will be exhibited at the Maine Jewish Museum from August 29, 2024 – October 31, 2024 and winners, along with their family and friends, will be invited to a special Opening Reception in their honor in September
