Our galleries at 267 Congress Street will temporarily close beginning November 1, 2026, while we undertake a major security enhancement project, made possible by $350,000 in federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding. We anticipate reopening in May 2027.
These improvements will help us better protect our visitors, staff, and historic building. This project is a proactive investment in the Museum’s future and is not in response to any specific threat or incident.
While our Congress Street galleries are closed, the Museum’s work continues, and our horizons are expanding!
After all, we’re the Maine Jewish Museum, and our mission extends far beyond the walls of our historic Portland home. Throughout the winter and spring, we’re planning to bring programs, educational opportunities, and experiences celebrating Maine’s Jewish history, art, and culture to communities across the state.
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve secured gallery space at 200 Middle Street, where we’ll begin presenting exhibitions in February 2027.
We’ll share details about upcoming exhibitions, programs, and events on the website and in our weekly newsletter, so stay tuned!
In addition to the security improvements, we’re moving forward with a complete reimagining of our Core Exhibition, which we anticipate unveiling beginning in summer 2027.
We expect to reopen our Congress Street galleries in May 2027 and look forward to welcoming visitors back to a more secure building, with exciting new experiences on the horizon.
Our Congress Street doors may be temporarily closed, but our creativity, curiosity, and commitment to sharing Maine’s Jewish stories are going strong.
Little Museum. Big Impact. And now, an even bigger footprint!
