10:00 am – 11:00 am
Join MJM Curator in Residence Nancy Davidson and Executive Director Dawn LaRochelle for an informal pre-opening drop-in and social hour at the Museum. This month, Portland’s inaugural Director of Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Umaru Balde, will be joining us as our special guest. Originally from Guinea-Bissau, Umaru moved to Egypt for school but fled to Israel after refusing to participate in discrimination against non-Muslims. He attended Hebrew University and speaks fluent Hebrew, as well as 12 other languages! In addition to his ground-breaking work for the City of Portland, Umaru is a doctoral candidate at the University of Northern Iowa. The coffee (from Coffee By Design!) will be strong, the crullers (from Eighty 8 Donuts!) will be sweet, and the conversation will be stimulating!
