MJM X Hadassah X Rimon Book Group
– November 2024

Sunday, November 3, 2024
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
At a private home

It’s baaaaaack — with a new twist! The beloved MJM X Hadassah Book Group is now combining forces with Rimon, the new Portland Women’s Jewish Group at the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine!

In November, we will meet at a Book Group member’s private home to discuss The Nightingale’s Sonata: The Musical Odyssey of Lea Lubshutz by fellow Mainer Tom Wolf… and Tom will be on site to join the discussion and answer all your questions about the book!

Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale’s Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luoshutz. Music offered Lea an escape from the antisemitism that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky.

As the world around them descends into the chaos of revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually the USA. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola, and even Leo Tolstoy. The little girl from Odessa will end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young. The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, Lea plays on.

A winner of the Sophie Brody Medal, The Nightingale’s Sonata is a moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the little-known life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists.
