Where They Stood is an interactive public art installation that brings historical figures into contemporary space through a combination of sculptural form and augmented reality. For this project in the Maine Jewish Museum garden, artist Timothy Goldkin worked closely with MJM Curator of Photography Nanci Kahn and Portland Public Library archivist and Special Collections Librarian Abraham A. Schechter to research, select, and thoughtfully interpret a historically significant individual connected
to Portland’s Jewish community. The installation is paired with a mobile-accessible augmented reality experience.
About the Artist
With a background in printmaking and alternative photographic processes, Timothy Goldkin has innovated the historical cyanotype process into a larger format using photographic negatives as a base. His time spent with graffiti artists across the country has led him to expand upon the uses of the traditional wheat-paste process to create beautiful and unique pieces.
