Color is King

Morris David Dorenfeld
January 8 – February 26, 2025

About This Exhibition

Trained as a painter, Morris David Dorenfeld considered his tapestries “Paintings in Fiber” and often said of his work, “Color is King.” This exhibition is a celebration of Morrie’s life and the color he celebrated in his tapestries.

For the last 45 years of his life, Morrie completed 146 tapestries. In that time, his work was exhibited and sold, and today, 63 tapestries remain in the care of the Morris David Dorenfeld Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to promote the artist’s work and find permanent homes for his work through exhibitions, sales and donation to non-profit collections.

About the Artist

Morris David Dorenfeld (1937-2023) was born in Chicago. He was one of three brothers, and after their father abandoned them during the Depression, he was raised by his mother, Rose, and maternal grandmother. He graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago as a painting major in 1960. It was only after meeting his life partner Bob Davis and moving to Maine that he embraced the tapestry as his primary medium of expression. For 45 years Morrie practiced the art of Tapestry, and built a life in Maine with Bob. They were passionate gardeners and collected art in their seaside home.
