Tamara Krendel

About This Exhibition
“This exhibit is an opportunity to see the evolution of my work,” says artist Tamara Krendel. She painted from her imagination before becoming a perceptual painter and found inspiration in how the light transformed the world around her. Painting can also be a lifeline during tragedies. “When I disappear into my work the outside world disappears too,” she says. “Painting creates windows revealing deeply felt realities; as personal imagery suggests universal themes; love, awe, mystery, joy, longing, etc. etc. revealing that we’re more alike than separate.”
About the Artist
From childhood through high school, Tamara Krendel took art classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She received BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied with Rackstraw Downes. Honors and awards include the Yale-Norfolk fellowship, the Skowhegan fellowship, a YADDO residency. A Fulbright and a Belgian Ministry of Dutch Culture Grant, which allowed her to live and paint for a year in Belgium. She concentrated on the unique light that informed the Northern Renaissance and how the landscape and weather affected the collective psyche of the inhabitants and was then powerfully distilled in their singular art.
