Emily Hass
May 8 – June 26, 2025
About This Exhibition
The Exiles series uses archival architectural plans of Berlin buildings occupied by Jews and persecuted artists of the 1930s to explore identity, place, and a culture’s loss, both of individual citizens and of a creative tradition.
“I began the series with my father’s childhood home,” says Hass. “My father was born in 1934; after the Nazis stripped his family of German citizenship and seized their business and properties, they fled Berlin for London in 1938. Exiles began as a reflection on a painful history, but with the rise of totalitarianism, persecution, and forced migration around the globe, that past is once again our present.”
The exhibition title, no one leaves home unless, comes from “Home” by the Somali-British poet Warsan Shire, which has become a rallying cry for those who work to help alleviate the suffering of today’s refugees.

The title of Emily Hass’ current exhibition, no one leaves home unless, is a line from the poem, “Home,” by Somali British poet Warsan Shire. Maine-based poet Anna Wrobel will recite the poem, then co-host a conversation with Hass about her artwork and about the impact of forced migration on people and cultures.
