Hidden in Plain Sight: Storefronts, Sidewalks, and Jewish Portland

Jane’s walk ME

Led by: Riva Krut

Jewish history is all around us in downtown Portland—if you know where to look. This walking conversation follows the Portland Jewish History Trail to explore how Jewish life took shape in the city through everyday places: storefronts and sidewalks, former businesses and meeting spaces, and streets many of us pass every day without noticing their layered histories.

The walk will begin and end at the front gate of the Maine Jewish Museum. It will take place at an easy, conversational pace over approximately 2 miles and is mostly flat, with a few stretches of uneven or cobblestone sidewalks typical of downtown Portland. Attendees should plan to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. We’ll make frequent stops along the route to pause, look closely, and talk together.

As we walk, we’ll visit sites connected to Jewish immigration, entrepreneurship, communal life, and civic engagement in Portland from the 19th century to the present. Stops may include former shopfronts, organizational and meeting spaces, and public streets where Jewish Portlanders lived, worked, gathered, and participated in the city’s civic life. Along the way, we’ll consider what remains visible, what has changed, and what has faded from view.

Rather than a lecture or traditional guided tour, this walk is designed as a facilitated conversation led by a guide from the Maine Jewish Museum. Participants are invited to listen, ask questions, and share observations.

Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of Portland’s Jewish history as part of Maine’s broader story, and how familiar streets can reveal unexpected histories when we slow down and walk together.
